Gudi Padwa marks the Hindu New Year according to the lunisolar calendar — the first day of Chaitra month in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. This is considered one of the most auspicious days to begin new ventures, make important decisions, and seek blessings for the year ahead.
Significance:
What to do:
Puja Muhurat: Sunrise to midday — any time works as the entire day is auspicious
Baisakhi is the harvest festival celebrated across Punjab and North India, coinciding with Mesha Sankranti — the Sun’s entry into Aries (the first sign of the zodiac). This is also the Sikh New Year and one of the most joyful cultural festivals of the year.
Significance:
What to do:
Akshaya Tritiya (also called Akha Teej) is considered one of the four most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar (along with Yugadi, Vijayadashami, and Dussehra). The word “Akshaya” means “that which never diminishes” — anything begun or purchased on this day is believed to grow and multiply forever.
Why it is so powerful:
What to do on Akshaya Tritiya:
Most Auspicious Time: Entire day — no specific muhurat needed
💡 Even buying a small gold coin or piece of jewellery on Akshaya Tritiya is considered highly meritorious. The intention matters more than the amount.
Coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya, Parashurama Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Parashurama — the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, born to sage Jamadagni and Renuka Mata. He is the only avatar of Vishnu who is considered immortal (Chiranjivi) and is said to still meditate on the Mahendragiri mountains.
Significance:
Mantra: Om Parashuramaaya Namah
Sita Navami (also called Janaki Navami) celebrates the appearance of Goddess Sita — daughter of King Janaka of Mithila, wife of Lord Ram, and one of the most revered feminine figures in Hindu tradition. She appeared from the earth as King Janaka was ploughing his field.
Significance:
What to do:
Mantra: Om Jai Sita Ram, Jai Jai Sita Ram
Ekadashi (the 11th day of each lunar fortnight) is one of the most important fasting days in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
(Krishna Paksha Ekadashi — Chaitra month)
“Papmochani” means “destroyer of sins.” Observing this Ekadashi with sincere fasting and Vishnu puja is said to cleanse the devotee of all past sins and grant moksha.
Fasting rule: Fast from sunrise April 10 to sunrise April 11. Break fast with simple sattvic food after morning puja.
(Shukla Paksha Ekadashi — Vaishakh month)
Mohini Ekadashi is one of the most powerful Ekadashis of the year. Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira that observing this Ekadashi destroys all sins and grants liberation. The name “Mohini” refers to the enchanting form Lord Vishnu took to distribute amrit (nectar of immortality) to the gods.
Fasting rule: Fast from sunrise April 26 to sunrise April 27. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama or recite “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” 108 times.
The full moon of Chaitra — also Hanuman Jayanti. This Purnima is excellent for:
The new moon of Vaishakh. Amavasya is sacred for:
Pradosh Vrat is observed on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of each lunar fortnight and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Fasting and worshipping Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal (1.5 hours before and after sunset) on these days is said to grant all desires.
💡 Som Pradosh (Monday Pradosh) is the most auspicious of all Pradosh vrats as it combines Lord Shiva’s favourite day (Monday) with the Pradosh tithi.
