🌟 Major Festivals of April 2026 — Detailed Guide

🚩 1. Hanuman Jayanti — April 1, 2026

The birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman falls on Chaitra Purnima — April 1, 2026. This is one of the most energetically powerful days of the year for worship, mantra chanting, and seeking blessings of strength and protection.

What to do:

  • Recite Hanuman Chalisa 11 times
  • Offer sindoor mixed with jasmine oil
  • Read Sundarkand with family
  • Distribute boondi prasad

Most Auspicious Time: Brahma Muhurat (4:30–6:00 AM) and morning puja (6:00–12:00 PM)

🏡 2. Gudi Padwa / Ugadi — April 9, 2026

Gudi Padwa marks the Hindu New Year according to the lunisolar calendar — the first day of Chaitra month in Maharashtra and Ugadi in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. This is considered one of the most auspicious days to begin new ventures, make important decisions, and seek blessings for the year ahead.

Significance:

  • Lord Brahma is said to have created the universe on this day
  • Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile — celebrated as His homecoming
  • The beginning of a new Vikram Samvat year cycle

What to do:

  • Wake up early, apply oil bath (abhyanga snan)
  • Hoist the Gudi (decorated bamboo) outside your home
  • Eat neem leaves with jaggery — symbol of life’s bitter-sweet balance
  • Prepare and share Puran Poli or Shrikhand
  • Begin any new work, purchase, or venture on this day

Puja Muhurat: Sunrise to midday — any time works as the entire day is auspicious

🌾 3. Baisakhi / Mesha Sankranti — April 14, 2026

Baisakhi is the harvest festival celebrated across Punjab and North India, coinciding with Mesha Sankranti — the Sun’s entry into Aries (the first sign of the zodiac). This is also the Sikh New Year and one of the most joyful cultural festivals of the year.

Significance:

  • Sun enters Mesha (Aries) — considered astrologically very significant
  • Bathing in holy rivers on Mesha Sankranti cleanses sins
  • In astrology, this day marks the beginning of a new solar year

What to do:

  • Take a holy dip in a river or add Gangajal to your bath
  • Visit a temple and offer prayers
  • Donate food, clothes, or money — charity on Sankranti is especially meritorious
  • Prepare traditional foods — kheer, lassi, sarson ka saag

✨ 4. Akshaya Tritiya — April 19, 2026

Akshaya Tritiya (also called Akha Teej) is considered one of the four most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar (along with Yugadi, Vijayadashami, and Dussehra). The word “Akshaya” means “that which never diminishes” — anything begun or purchased on this day is believed to grow and multiply forever.

Why it is so powerful:

  • Both the Sun and Moon are exalted simultaneously — an extremely rare cosmic occurrence
  • No muhurat check needed — the entire day is self-auspicious (Swayamsiddha Muhurat)
  • Lord Kubera (god of wealth) is especially worshipped on this day
  • The Treta Yuga began on Akshaya Tritiya
  • Sudama visited Krishna on this day and received boundless prosperity

What to do on Akshaya Tritiya:

  • 🪙 Buy gold, silver, or property — even a small amount brings lasting prosperity
  • 🌊 Take a holy bath and donate to the poor
  • 📖 Begin a new business, account book, or venture
  • 🌾 Donate wheat, ghee, or food to Brahmins or the needy
  • 🙏 Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi with yellow flowers
  • 💍 Many families perform weddings and engagements on this day

Most Auspicious Time: Entire day — no specific muhurat needed

💡 Even buying a small gold coin or piece of jewellery on Akshaya Tritiya is considered highly meritorious. The intention matters more than the amount.

⚔️ 5. Parashurama Jayanti — April 19, 2026

Coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya, Parashurama Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Parashurama — the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, born to sage Jamadagni and Renuka Mata. He is the only avatar of Vishnu who is considered immortal (Chiranjivi) and is said to still meditate on the Mahendragiri mountains.

Significance:

  • Parashurama represents the warrior spirit combined with Brahminical knowledge
  • He is the guru of Bhishma, Drona, and Karna in the Mahabharata
  • Worshipping him on this day grants skill, courage, and mastery of one’s craft

Mantra: Om Parashuramaaya Namah

🌸 6. Sita Navami — April 25, 2026

Sita Navami (also called Janaki Navami) celebrates the appearance of Goddess Sita — daughter of King Janaka of Mithila, wife of Lord Ram, and one of the most revered feminine figures in Hindu tradition. She appeared from the earth as King Janaka was ploughing his field.

Significance:

  • Worshipping Sita Mata on this day blesses women with marital happiness, strength, and purity
  • It is an extremely auspicious day for newly married couples to seek blessings
  • Sita Mata represents ideal womanhood — patience, devotion, courage, and grace

What to do:

  • Worship Sita-Ram together
  • Offer yellow flowers, tulsi, and sweets
  • Read or listen to Sita’s story from the Ramayana
  • Women observe a fast for marital bliss

Mantra: Om Jai Sita Ram, Jai Jai Sita Ram

🙏 Ekadashi Vrats in April 2026

Ekadashi (the 11th day of each lunar fortnight) is one of the most important fasting days in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Papmochani Ekadashi — April 10, 2026

(Krishna Paksha Ekadashi — Chaitra month)

“Papmochani” means “destroyer of sins.” Observing this Ekadashi with sincere fasting and Vishnu puja is said to cleanse the devotee of all past sins and grant moksha.

Fasting rule: Fast from sunrise April 10 to sunrise April 11. Break fast with simple sattvic food after morning puja.

Mohini Ekadashi — April 26, 2026

(Shukla Paksha Ekadashi — Vaishakh month)

Mohini Ekadashi is one of the most powerful Ekadashis of the year. Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira that observing this Ekadashi destroys all sins and grants liberation. The name “Mohini” refers to the enchanting form Lord Vishnu took to distribute amrit (nectar of immortality) to the gods.

Fasting rule: Fast from sunrise April 26 to sunrise April 27. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama or recite “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” 108 times.

🔱 Pradosh Vrat Dates in April 2026

Pradosh Vrat is observed on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of each lunar fortnight and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Fasting and worshipping Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal (1.5 hours before and after sunset) on these days is said to grant all desires.

  • April 12 (Sunday) — Ravi Pradosh (Sunday Pradosh — especially powerful)
  • April 27 (Monday) — Som Pradosh (Monday Pradosh — most powerful of all)
