Ghatasthapana — the installation of the sacred Kalash — is the most important ritual of Navratri. It marks the formal beginning of the nine-day worship.
Shubh Muhurat for Ghatasthapana 2026:
| Muhurat | Time |
|---|---|
| Pratah (Morning) Muhurat | 6:15 AM – 8:30 AM |
| Abhijit Muhurat | 11:58 AM – 12:48 PM |
⚠️ Avoid Ghatasthapana during Chitra Nakshatra period and Vaidhriti Yoga — check your local Panchang for exact timings.
Samagri for Ghatasthapana:
Step-by-Step Ghatasthapana:
Step 1: Clean your puja space and spread a red cloth on the altar facing East.
Step 2: Fill a small clay pot with fresh soil. Sow barley or wheat seeds in it — these will sprout over the 9 days as a symbol of growth and prosperity.
Step 3: Fill the Kalash with Gangajal. Add a betel nut, a coin, and akshata inside.
Step 4: Place mango leaves around the mouth of the Kalash. Place a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top.
Step 5: Draw a swastika on the Kalash with red sindoor or kumkum.
Step 6: Place the Kalash on top of the soil pot. Install the image or idol of Goddess Durga beside it.
Step 7: Light the diya and chant the Ghatasthapana mantra:
“Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche”
Step 8: Offer flowers, akshata, and sindoor to the Goddess. The puja has begun!
🌱 Water the sprouting seeds daily for all 9 days. On Day 9 (Navami), after the final puja, the sprouted grass (called “jawara”) is distributed as prasad — a symbol of the Goddess’s blessings taking root in your life.
Follow this simple daily routine for each day of Navratri:
Morning (After Bath):
Evening (Sandhya):
Shailputri is the first form of Navadurga. Daughter of the Himalayas, she rides a bull and carries a trident. She represents the raw, grounded power of nature. Worship her for courage to begin new journeys. Mantra: Om Devi Shailputryai Namah
She represents penance, wisdom, and spiritual discipline. She walks barefoot, carries a rosary and a water pot. Worship her for mental strength, academic success, and inner peace. Mantra: Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah
She wears a half-moon bell on her forehead and rides a tiger. She destroys evil and fills devotees with fearlessness. Worship her for protection from enemies and negative energies. Mantra: Om Devi Chandraghantayai Namah
She is the creator of the universe — her divine smile brought light into darkness. She rides a lion and has eight arms. Worship her for vibrant health, energy, and radiance. Mantra: Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah
She is the mother of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda) and is seated on a lotus. She represents the fierce protective love of a mother. Worship her for the wellbeing of your children and family. Mantra: Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah
Born to sage Katyayana, she is the fierce warrior who slew Mahishasura. She rides a lion with a sword in hand. Worship her for removing obstacles, winning legal battles, and finding a life partner. Mantra: Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah
The most fierce form of Durga — dark-complexioned, with wild hair and a blazing aura. She destroys all darkness and evil without mercy. Worship her for complete protection and to destroy deep-rooted fears. Mantra: Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah
Pure white in complexion, gentle and serene. She symbolises purity, forgiveness, and inner beauty. She rides a white bull. Worship her for cleansing past sins and attracting peace and happiness. Mantra: Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah
The final and most complete form — she bestows all eight siddhis (supernatural attainments) and moksha itself. She is seated on a lotus and is worshipped by gods, humans, and sages alike. Mantra: Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah
Who Should Fast: Anyone seeking the Goddess’s blessings, spiritual growth, or fulfilment of a specific wish.

On the ninth day (Navami), it is a beloved tradition across North India to perform Kanjak Puja — inviting young girls (kanya) into your home and worshipping them as living forms of the Goddess.
How to Perform Kanjak Puja:
🙏 In Vedic tradition, a young girl is considered the purest living form of Shakti. Her blessings on Navami are said to fulfil the entire nine days of puja.
Navarna Mantra (Chant 108 times daily):
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche
Durga Saptashati Beej Mantra:
ॐ ह्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः Om Hreem Dum Durgaye Namah
For Strength & Protection:
सर्वमंगल मांगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके शरण्ये त्र्यंबके गौरी नारायणी नमोस्तुते
For Removing Fear & Negativity:
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः
Navratri is not merely a religious festival — it is a cosmic invitation. For nine days, the veil between the human and divine thins, and the Goddess’s energy is more accessible than at any other time of year. Whether you fast or not, whether you perform elaborate rituals or simply light a small diya each evening — what matters is the sincerity of your heart. The Goddess does not need grand offerings. She needs only your love, your awareness, and your willingness to grow.
May these nine days bring you strength, clarity, and the Goddess’s boundless grace.
