🪔 Ghatasthapana Vidhi — Day 1 (March 19)

Ghatasthapana — the installation of the sacred Kalash — is the most important ritual of Navratri. It marks the formal beginning of the nine-day worship.

Shubh Muhurat for Ghatasthapana 2026:

MuhuratTime
Pratah (Morning) Muhurat6:15 AM – 8:30 AM
Abhijit Muhurat11:58 AM – 12:48 PM

⚠️ Avoid Ghatasthapana during Chitra Nakshatra period and Vaidhriti Yoga — check your local Panchang for exact timings.

Samagri for Ghatasthapana:

  • Earthen or copper Kalash (pot)
  • Gangajal or clean water
  • Mango leaves (5 or 7)
  • Coconut
  • Red cloth
  • Akshata (unbroken rice mixed with turmeric)
  • Soil from a holy place or your garden
  • Seeds (barley/wheat) to sow in the soil
  • Flowers, especially red ones

Step-by-Step Ghatasthapana:

Step 1: Clean your puja space and spread a red cloth on the altar facing East.

Step 2: Fill a small clay pot with fresh soil. Sow barley or wheat seeds in it — these will sprout over the 9 days as a symbol of growth and prosperity.

Step 3: Fill the Kalash with Gangajal. Add a betel nut, a coin, and akshata inside.

Step 4: Place mango leaves around the mouth of the Kalash. Place a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top.

Step 5: Draw a swastika on the Kalash with red sindoor or kumkum.

Step 6: Place the Kalash on top of the soil pot. Install the image or idol of Goddess Durga beside it.

Step 7: Light the diya and chant the Ghatasthapana mantra:

“Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche”

Step 8: Offer flowers, akshata, and sindoor to the Goddess. The puja has begun!

🌱 Water the sprouting seeds daily for all 9 days. On Day 9 (Navami), after the final puja, the sprouted grass (called “jawara”) is distributed as prasad — a symbol of the Goddess’s blessings taking root in your life.

How to Perform Kanjak Puja:

  1. Invite 9 young girls (ideally below age 10) to your home
  2. Wash their feet with clean water

💫 A Word from VaydikCosmos

Navratri is not merely a religious festival — it is a cosmic invitation. For nine days, the veil between the human and divine thins, and the Goddess’s energy is more accessible than at any other time of year. Whether you fast or not, whether you perform elaborate rituals or simply light a small diya each evening — what matters is the sincerity of your heart. The Goddess does not need grand offerings. She needs only your love, your awareness, and your willingness to grow.

May these nine days bring you strength, clarity, and the Goddess’s boundless grace.

Jai Mata Di! 🙏
